Big Way coaching weekend

Hibaldstow 11-12 June 2005

Just three of us turned up for the weekend, so big ways as such were not possible. However, the classroom work was relevant and covered the skills required. Pete and Billy introduced their four skills groupings and talked through the skills needed at each stage of the skydive from before takeoff to leaving the landing area. Many of the points were illustrated with video footage taken from the world record and other very large formations

The weather didn't look too promising, but the DZ eventually managed 14 lifts on Saturday, and we got in some diving and no contact practice. We also did some dives that required much more flying than you normally get in the average fourway, ending Sunday with a five way "day at the races" (flying from one end of an open accordian to the other).

If we want to get UK POPS to build a sensible record, rather than build a record from skydivers over forty who've joined POPS for the record, then we should make an effort to support Pete and Billy in these coaching camps so that we will have the skills needed to form a record team and bench for 2006

European POPS meet at RAPA April/May 2005

We had a good turnout at RAPA with a good few Brits. Friday was rainy, Saturday was good jumping and Sunday was the hottest day of the year with temperatures in the thirties.

Thanks to Paul Moore and his staff for a good weekend.

2005 AGM

Niels presented the accounts for the year and gave a summary of the main items of expenditure. He described the successful Swiss World meet.

POPS AGM 2005 He talked about the upcoming meets and asked for a show of hands for interest in the European meet at Bad Lippspringe at the end of April and beginning of May. There were about twenty hands raised. Major Paul Moore from RAPA was present and advised that camping was available and that he could be contacted regarding local B&B. He said that Air Berlin fly to Paderborn from Manchester, Stansted and Southampton and that early bookings could be as low as £20 each way. RAPA are prepared to pick up from Paderborn. Beer is still cheap.

The main British meet will take place as usual on the last weekend in June, and is once again to be at Target Skysports at Hibaldstow.

Niels is also hoping to arrange another weekend around September - maybe a repeat of the freefly introduction.

Lesley Gale receiving her POPS membership
Jack Felstead has had other commitments and is not able to continue running the POPS record attempts this year, but Pete Knight and Billy Payn have agreed to take this responsibility. They are planning a number of training weekends with an attempt sometime in mid year, probably at a different drop zone. Watch the web site and the POPS mail list for information.

Niels said that he had discovered that Lesley Gale had recently "come of age" and that in recognition of her services to sports parachuting that he intended to grant her honorary membership. As the POPS AGM finished in good time, we had the opportunity to invade her "Brit Chicks" presentation and steal a minute or two to present her with her membership and a framed certificate. Welcome to the POPS Lesley, we hope to see you on our next big way attempt.
